Investigating the Historic Fears House: A Night of Whispers, Whiskey, and Unanswered Questions

Investigating the Historic Fears House with Nvus Alien Productions

Investigating the Historic Fears House began after Oklahoma Murder Mystery wrapped up another performance inside the beautiful historic home in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Most of the guests headed home, the lights dimmed, the costumes were put away, and the house settled into the kind of quiet that only old buildings seem to possess after midnight.

But twelve people stayed behind.

Instead of gathering around the dinner table to solve a scripted mystery, they gathered around equipment cases filled with K2 meters, EMF detectors, dowsing rods, spirit boxes, GhostTube applications, SLS mapping software, infrared thermometers, and light-up cat balls. Cameras were unpacked. Batteries were checked. Microphones were clipped into place.

What followed was two hours of exploring one of Muskogee’s most fascinating historic homes room by room, documenting whatever we experienced with an open mind and plenty of curiosity. By the end of the night, we had collected a handful of strange moments.

Months later, those moments became even stranger. Because some of the things we experienced that night didn’t make sense until history caught up with us.

The Fears House sits within Muskogee’s historic Founders’ Place neighborhood, one of the city’s oldest and most distinguished residential districts. Before the streets filled with elegant homes, much of the land belonged to Judge Stockton Summerfield Fears, a respected attorney and civic leader whose ranch once stretched across the area. As Muskogee expanded during the early twentieth century, Founders’ Place became home to many of the city’s physicians, attorneys, bankers, merchants, judges, and politicians, quickly earning a reputation as one of Muskogee’s premier neighborhoods.

Today, the Fears House has entered another chapter in its long history.

The beautifully restored residence serves as the home of Oklahoma Murder Mystery, where guests enjoy interactive dinner theater inside a genuine historic home. It also operates as a charming bed-and-breakfast, giving visitors an opportunity to spend the night surrounded by more than a century of local history.

High ceilings greet you as soon as you walk through the front door. Original woodwork, oversized rooms, and period architecture immediately remind you that this home has witnessed generations of conversations, celebrations, losses, and ordinary family life. Whether or not someone believes in the paranormal, there’s no denying that homes like this have stories to tell.

Before we started investigating, owner, Cammi Valdez, welcomed everyone into the living room and shared the history of the house. She talked about the families who had lived there over the decades, the neighborhood’s development, and how the home eventually became Oklahoma Murder Mystery.

While Cammi spoke, I unpacked our investigation equipment across a nearby table.

Several members of the group had never participated in a paranormal investigation before. Rather than simply handing them gadgets and turning out the lights, we spent time explaining what each piece of equipment does and, just as importantly, what it doesn’t do.

A K2 meter measures fluctuations in electromagnetic fields. Cat balls are simple motion-activated children’s toys that investigators often use as visual trigger objects. Spirit boxes rapidly scan radio frequencies. The SLS camera attempts to map human-like figures.

None of these devices prove paranormal activity on their own. They’re simply tools that help document unusual experiences when they occur. After everyone had an opportunity to ask questions and become familiar with the equipment, we spread out across the living room and officially began the investigation.

The living room immediately became one of the most interesting locations of the night.

It’s an elegant space with towering ceilings, a large fireplace, and enough room that conversations naturally drift from one end to the other. Standing there, it wasn’t difficult to imagine the generations of people who had gathered in that room long before us.

One member of our film crew, Sean, looked around and laughed.

“You know these guys probably sat in here drinking whiskey and smoking cigars.”

It wasn’t part of any investigation protocol. It was simply an observation inspired by the room itself. Curious, Sean set a bottle of alcohol near one of the light-up cat balls. Almost immediately, the cat ball activated.

Then another.

Whether coincidence or something more, it instantly caught everyone’s attention. Conversations stopped. People looked around the room. Sean laughed in surprise and joked that maybe whoever had spent evenings in the room appreciated the offering.

Around the same time, GhostTube began producing responses that seemed relevant to the conversation happening in the room. We’re still carefully reviewing those recordings before drawing conclusions, but the timing was certainly enough to make everyone stop and pay attention.

As interesting as the equipment responses were, the most unusual experience in the living room belonged to someone who wasn’t even watching the investigation.

She was listening to it. My sister, Sarah, was filming the investigation. Unlike everyone else, she wasn’t watching meters or asking questions. She was focused on framing shots, monitoring audio, and making sure every important moment was captured on camera. She was also wearing professional monitoring headphones.

Only I was wearing a wireless microphone, which meant my voice should have been isolated to one side of her headphones while the rest of the room came through naturally. Instead, she kept hearing whispers. At first she didn’t think much of it. Someone must have leaned over and quietly spoken to me. She continued filming.

A few minutes later…

More whispering.

Again she assumed someone nearby had quietly said something. Finally, after hearing it several times, she stopped and asked me.

“Is somebody whispering to you?”

I looked at her, confused.

“No.”

In fact, one of my standard rules during investigations is that nobody whispers. If someone has something to say, they say it out loud. Whispering creates unnecessary confusion during audio review and can easily be mistaken for unexplained voices later.

No one had been whispering.

Sarah shrugged it off and kept filming. But the whispers didn’t stay behind in the living room. She heard them again later in the dining room.Whether those whispers were captured on the recorded audio remains to be seen, but it was one of the more unusual personal experiences of the evening.

Our next stop was the dining room, where we prepared for a Ouija board session. Not everyone wanted to participate. A few guests politely excused themselves and stepped outside while the rest of us arranged ourselves around the table. While waiting in the front garden, those guests opened the GhostTube SLS application and casually pointed it toward one of the flower beds. The screen immediately mapped two small stick figures dancing together.

There was no one standing there.

The experience startled them enough that they quickly decided perhaps sitting inside with the Ouija board wasn’t such a bad alternative after all.Eventually everyone gathered around the dining room table. As the session progressed, one name began surfacing repeatedly.

Richard.

One participant, Julie, immediately recognized the name as someone close to her who had recently passed away. Naturally, the conversation shifted in that direction. Everyone assumed the communication, if genuine, was connected to Julie’s Richard.

That seemed to make perfect sense.

Until months later.

After the investigation, Cammi reached out to members of one of the previous families who had lived in the house for decades. During those conversations, another Richard entered the story. A member of that family.

As Cammi reviewed our investigation footage while comparing it to information provided by the family, she realized something remarkable. Several of the statements we believed referred to Julie’s Richard actually aligned much more closely with the former resident.

Instead of one conversation taking place around the Ouija board…There may have been two. It wasn’t something anyone realized that night. Only after learning more about the house’s history did the possibility even become visible. Those are the kinds of moments that make historical research just as important as the investigation itself.

Our final major investigation took place in the basement using the Estes Method. For anyone unfamiliar with the technique, one participant wears a blindfold and noise-isolating headphones connected to a rapidly scanning spirit box. Because they cannot hear the questions being asked, any relevant responses become especially interesting when reviewed afterward.

During one session, a series of words emerged that seemed disconnected at the time.

A wedding.

A photo album.

Fire.

None of us understood what those references meant.

Later, Cammi learned that a wedding had actually taken place inside the house during one family’s ownership. Now she hopes to sit down with members of that family and review the footage together. Perhaps they’ll recognize details we couldn’t possibly have known that evening. Sometimes the answers don’t arrive during an investigation. Sometimes they arrive months later through conversations with the people who know the house best.

As the evening continued, Sean decided to repeat the experiment that had drawn so much attention upstairs. He brought the alcohol into the basement. Once again, the atmosphere shifted. Equipment became more active, conversation picked up, and during one exchange the communication app produced a response that made everyone in the room laugh.

“Not again.”

Sean laughed and jokingly asked whether whoever was present also wanted tobacco. That simple joke unexpectedly connected with another detail Cammi would later uncover. She learned that members of one of the families who had lived in the home were heavy smokers.

That discovery immediately caught her attention because both she and co-owner Sarah have frequently noticed the smell of cigarette smoke drifting through the house despite neither of them smoking and no nearby neighbors regularly smoking outdoors.

One of the biggest lessons from our first investigation inside the Fears House wasn’t about ghost hunting equipment. It was about patience. If we had packed up that night and never looked back, we would have left believing we understood everything that had happened. Instead, the investigation continued long after the cameras stopped rolling.

History filled in missing pieces. Former residents added context. A second Richard emerged. References to weddings suddenly mattered. Old family stories transformed what initially sounded like random words into meaningful possibilities. Even Sarah’s whispers remain an open question waiting for further audio review.

None of these experiences, standing alone, prove the existence of ghosts. That’s never been our goal. Good investigations aren’t about forcing extraordinary conclusions. They’re about documenting experiences honestly, researching them thoroughly, and remaining willing to change your interpretation as new information becomes available.

Sometimes the most fascinating part of an investigation isn’t what happens in the moment. It’s what you discover months later. This was our first investigation inside the historic Fears House. Judging by the questions that still remain unanswered, I have a feeling it won’t be our last.
